What Does the Maserati Logo Mean?

A 2020 Maserati Quattroporte with the Maserati logo on the front grille

Scottsdale drivers recognize that trident logo anywhere, whether it’s on a Ghibli or a Quattroporte. But have you ever asked yourself, what does the Maserati logo mean? What does a trident have to do with an Italian car? Find out with Scottsdale Maserati.

A Look at the Maserati Logo Meaning

In Roman mythology, the trident is associated with Neptune, a powerful god who symbolizes dominion over the sea. Well, there are no seas in the Paradise Valley area, but the Maserati definitely owns the local roads. The Maserati logo meaning goes beyond the trident and incorporates the company’s signature colors, too.

It’s usually depicted in monochromatic grays, but what does the Maserati logo mean when the trident emblem is red on a field of white and blue? This is sometimes referred to as the “saetta logo,” and it adds another layer of symbolism. Here’s how they add to the Maserati logo meaning:

  • When the Maserati trident is on navy blue it represents Roman god Neptune’s domain over the sea and how it’s the source of his strength.
  • When the trident on the Maserati logo is on a white or silver field, it represents the land, where Maserati vehicles rule the roads.
  • The red trident symbolizes the fiery power of the Maserati, which delivers unparalleled performance on highways from Rome to Chandler, and around the world.

The History of the Maserati Logo and Brand

There are three key moments in the history of Maserati brand’s birth:

  • Maserati was founded in Bologna, Italy in 1914.
  • Around 1920, the logo design was created. One of the Maserati brothers got the idea to use Neptune’s trident from the Marquis Diego de Sterlich, a friend of the family.
  • In 1926, Maserati started building their vehicles from the ground up. It was then that the Maserati logo made its first appearance on a finished vehicle, the Tipo 26.

Even though Maserati gave up their home 95 kilometers from the sea in 1940 and moved further inland to Modena, they kept the trident symbol and the Maserati ethos you know and love.
