Possible Reasons Why Water Is Leaking From Under Your Car

Here are some common reasons why your car may be leaking water: 

• Paper Test: Put a sheet of paper underneath your car where water is dripping. If the fluid that hits the paper isn’t water, you’ll see it on the paper. 
• Coolant: Anything that’s blue, green, or yellow is more than likely coolant.
• Low Coolant Levels: If you have a coolant leak, check your coolant reservoir to see if the reservoir is low. You might just need a top-off.
• Blow Gasket: If a large amount of water, something more than dripping, is coming from your exhaust, then you may have a blown gasket. This can cause the coolant to be burned at the same rate the fuel is burning. This can cause your engine to overheat, which can lead to a lot of water or white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. 
• Cracked Windshield Wiper Fluid Reservoir: If you use water in your windshield wiper fluid, it can freeze in the reservoir when it gets cold outside. This can cause the plastic container to expand and crack. If this container gets cracked, then windshield wiper fluid can leak from it. Windshield wiper fluid is usually light blue or light green.

Different Fluids That Can Leak From Under Your Car 

If you use the paper test we talked about earlier and see a fluid that’s not a clear color, like what water should be, then it’s something else. Here are some possible fluids that could be coming from under your car based on what color it is: 

• Green: Antifreeze from water pump, hoses, or radiator
• Blue: Windshield wiper fluid
• Dark Brown: Brake fluid or older engine oil
• Light Brown: Newer engine oil or gear lubricant
• Red: Transmission fluid or power steering fluid
• Orange: Transmission fluid or radiator coolant
• Yellow: Radiator coolant
• Pink: Power steering fluid or transmission fluid
