Ferrari vs. Maserati: History

The best place to start your comparison of Maserati vs. Ferrari is to take a quick look at the history of both brands.

Maserati

The Maserati brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto established the Maserati brand on December 1, 1914, in Bologna, Italy. That same year, an early model driven by Alfieri Maserati won the Targa Florio. Maserati continued to produce race cars and win competitions up until 1957 when the company decided to change direction and produce exotic cars that offered class, style, and luxury, as well as thrilling performance. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to drive a Maserat on Paradise Valley-area highways, you know what that means. Maserati vehicles have been manufactured in Italy since its founding in 1914.

Ferrari

Founded by Enzo Ferrari in Maranello, Italy, on September 13, 1939, Ferrari was solely focused on producing race cars. From the beginning, Ferrari has excelled in the world of racing, as evidenced by their record 16 Formula One Constructors’ Championships. Today, Ferrari continues to offer high-performance vehicles manufactured in Maranello with a decided focus on supercars and racing.

Maserati or Ferrari: Engines

Comparing Ferrari vs. Maserati in terms of performance will show that, while Ferrari holds the edge with track-ready vehicles, Maserati can certainly hold its own and still provide a comfortable and well-balanced ride quality on Phoenix roads.

Over the years, Maserati has had several ownership changes, and while its primary goal has been the production of elegant and sophisticated vehicles, high-performance has also been a strong focus. Fiat owns Ferrari and bought Maserati in the 1990s. Since 2001, Maserati engines have been produced by Ferrari. In 2022, Maserati began to produce its own engines, starting with the Nettuno engine featured in the Maserati MC20. The F1 derived Nettuno 3.0-liter V6 can deliver 621 hp with 538 lb-ft of torque, and can sprint from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds, taking the MC20 into the same supercar territory of Ferrari 296 GTB.
